SIMON DOLBY

Dolby trained at The Ruskin School of Art in Cambridge in the 70’s and worked as an illustrator and designer for many years before embarking on a career as a fine artist 20 years ago. After buying the old Oundle doctors’ surgery, he and his wife Gillian converted it into a house and studio, later changing the patients’ waiting rooms into an art gallery.

He paints in watercolour and oils, particularly architectural and landscape subjects. He has taken on many commissions for architectural paintings including Burghley and Drayton House. In 2018 a commission by Lucy Chenevix-Trench to paint a 4′ x 3′ oil painting of Madresfield Court in Worcestershire was completed. Madresfield Court is a wonderful 900 year old moated house and is also famous as the setting and inspiration for Evelyn Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited.

In 2013 he was commissioned to paint a large canvas of the Grand Canal, Venice and in 2018 was commissioned by the same client to paint a 6′ x 4′ Capriccio painting of Oundle featuring the customers house set in 18 century Oundle along with a number of Oundle School buildings.

‘I am a professional Chartered Engineer, but have always had a passion for working with wood. I was introduced to woodturning in the mid 1990s by my father who was recovering from illness and had decided to try his hand at the craft as a form of therapy. Through the early, somewhat experimental, days helping my father I realised that woodturning offered a unique way to express myself outside of the relatively straight lines generally associated with conventional cabinetwork. I regularly enter pieces into the national woodturning shows and have been commended on my work with some pieces winning prizes.’

Painter and printmaker Carry Akroyd has lived most of her life in rural East Northamptonshire. Her interest in the landscape draws on many levels of fascination: history mainly, also geology, botany and wildlife. She is drawn to the nature of the unlabelled countryside trying to survive alongside agribusiness. Carry enjoys working in different media; a subject will sometimes demand to be treated in a certain way or go through many processes. Her use of colour is instinctive.

‘Inspiration for my work comes from the natural world and the materials around me. Observing both, for as long as I remember, inspired hours of creative mind games and excitement in me. Many of my works start from a found object which I build a form around, often using materials from the same location. This element of chance forces me to explore the possibilities of these, often unconventional, materials. My abilities to make use of such materials rooted in the discipline of traditional basketry technique.

My recent work has focused on willow, deconstructing and experimenting allowing me, over time, to develop a more intimate knowledge of it. This knowledge then helps me to reconstruct using the various craft and basketry skills available to me.’

‘After graduating from the Byam Shaw school of art in London in 1973 I did a series of different jobs but always kept painting. I lived in an Acme house in Hackney. I have been a full time artist since 1992 and have shown in London, Cambridge and Viersen in Germany.

The work consists mainly of oil paintings and drawings and etchings. My main source of inspiration until recently has been landscape, but now I am working on a series inspired by figures in motion.

In my work I want to maintain an abstract independence between form and content. My aim being to work on the borderline between abstraction and figuration rather than copying nature.’

GERI WADDINGTON

Geri Waddington trained in painting at the Slade School of Fine Art. She started engraving in 1995, and was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 2001, and its Chairman in 2014. She has exhibited regularly with the Society of Wood Engravers, the National Print Exhibition (later named ‘Originals’), (prizewinner 1999 and 2005), The International Miniature Print Exhibition, and at the Royal Academy and numerous independent galleries. She makes and sells independent prints and also illustrates hand-made private press books, where her engravings are printed directly from the wood, and has work in collections in the UK and abroad.

Wood engraving is one the simplest and yet most intense forms of printmaking; an image is produced by engraving into the polished endgrain surface of a block of wood (traditionally boxwood), with a variety of tools, which can produce a wide vocabulary of marks. The block is then inked with a roller and printed onto paper, where the cut marks appear as white. .

Gillian’s style is bright, colourful and amazingly observant. Her detailed style has developed from her earlier career as a children’s book illustrator. She has in the past has worked for ‘Ladybird’ Books, Cassell Books, Transworld Publishing, National Trust, and Oxford University Press.

She has illustrated educational books as well as book jackets and stories. More recently she was commissioned to illustrate ‘Dora Dormouse’ an enchanting picture book for young children written by Liz Dickson.

Her compilation illustration of ‘Oundle’ has been a best seller at The Dolby Gallery and a new version is now finished and published as a new Limited Edition Print.

EDWARD DOUGLAS

Edward is a local designer/maker working from his busy workshop in the heart of Oundle’s market place. He designs and makes a range of bespoke furniture including cabinetry, kitchens, garden gates and doors. He has a clean, stripped back aesthetic and enjoys using sustainably sourced, beautiful timber allowing teh materials to take centre stage.

MIKKI LONGLEY

Mikki trained at Cheltenham School of Art and Nottingham Trent Polytechnic, graduating with first class honours in 1988. She then spent 13 successful years as a graphic designer in London and Surrey, producing award winning work for international clients. Mikki returned to the East Midlands in 2000 and was inspired to paint the attractive villages and towns she found on her doorstep.

In her work, Mikki defines a sense of place and the architectural character for each individual location. Each piece is brimming with colour, texture and pattern, creating a heightened reality and a very personal view of the world.
